Service Description

THE WORK Stories that actually get made, get seen, and have lasting success have more than good writing. Scripts go the distance when they’re undeniable: to agents, producers, buyers, and audiences… but “undeniable” looks different for every story and every writer. Whether you’re a novice or a pro, this one-day intensive is a crash course in story development that’s self-directed, intentional, and strong enough to stand out in a changing market. Speaking frankly about how the sausage is made, we start by understanding how a story gets from an idea to a fifth season, with practical, anti-gatekeeping advice on how to approach studio notes, power dynamics, writer’s block, pitfalls, etc. Next we focus on story, introducing an adaptable story-building and diagnostic framework (STORY MATRIX) you can use to identify and sharpen your unique story components, individually and as a functioning whole: from subtext to symbolism, and from plot to marketing. Finally, you have some time to put the story matrix into practice by working on a component of your story in class and sharing your work for supportive feedback. THE RESULT You will leave with a more developed component of your story and a detailed understanding of how you can take your script the rest of the way. THE INSTRUCTOR Emily Hardy is a recovering TV executive who started as an actor, writer and producer, and by this point has worn all the hats. After 8+ years developing drama series for Netflix, HBO, ABC, Amazon, CBS, TNT/tbs, AMC and internationally, she returned to her artistic roots as actor-writer-dancer. She now consults, teaches and script doctors, and is most proud of her work as a teaching artist with incarcerated youth in Los Angeles. STUDENT TESTIMONIALS “Emily’s razor-sharp insights will have you returning to your scripts with a toolkit you just can’t get anywhere else, and writing your next projects with a newfound sense of what will make them absolutely stand out. I cannot recommend Emily and her workshop highly enough!” –E.R., filmmaker “Emily! Thank you so so much! Hearing your thoughts on how to make the story stronger, as well as the nuggets of information about the way execs will pay attention, is truly amazing! Thank you for pouring so much of your knowledge onto us! And being so beautifully specific.” –V.N., filmmaker-actor Course Details Schedule: One Day Capacity: Limited to 12 students.
