Service Description
Without deep rehearsal, scene work stays on the surface:safe, predictable, and polite. Most actors settle for their first choice, miss the hidden subtext, and perform at a scene partner rather than genuinely listening and connecting. Without room to test impulses and fail safely, you risk leaving your strongest, most truthful choices on the page. In this six-week scene study intensive, you’ll work closely with veteran director and Master Teacher Joe Garcia to break out of comfortable habits, stop making safe choices, and discover what you've been missing in your work. Each week, you’ll return to your scene, developing character, relationship, and circumstances through an active rehearsal process that forces you to stay present and responsive. Working with a dedicated scene partner, you’ll interrogate the text, respond to live adjustments, and allow the work to become specific, connected, and unmistakably alive. Throughout the course, you'll: Rehearse and develop scene work over multiple weeks. Explore character, relationships, circumstances, and behavior through text. Strengthen listening, responsiveness, and connection with a partner. Take creative risks and discover new possibilities through rehearsal. Receive individualized direction and adjustments as work develops. Prepare selected scene work for a live showcase on the LACAE stage. The course culminates in a live showcase, giving you the opportunity to bring fully rehearsed work out of the classroom and onto the stage in front of an audience. Instructor Spotlight Joe Garcia is an award-winning actor, director, and teacher with four decades of experience. Known by his students as an "actor's coach," Joe's work centers on helping actors move beyond performance for performance's sake and toward choices that are specific, connected, spontaneous, and deeply human.
