Building The Character: Online Class

In this six-week online class, Emmy®-nominated actor Cameron Britton explores character preparation as an active, physical process. Using elements of Viewpoints, you’ll learn how to move beyond self-consciousness, respond to what is happening in the scene, and build characters that feel specific, believable, and fully lived-in. You’ll also examine roles you have played in the past to understand which choices opened up the work and which habits may have limited it. By identifying what you have already learned through performance, you can carry those discoveries into future roles without repeating the same character. Throughout the course, you’ll: • Use Viewpoints-based exercises to get out of your head and into the physical life of the scene. • Build character through behavior, movement, environment, relationship, and text. • Examine past roles to identify useful discoveries, instincts, and recurring habits. • Make bolder, more specific choices without forcing a result. • Develop a character-preparation process you can adapt to new material. • Receive individualized coaching from an actor known for deeply transformative work. This class is an opportunity to loosen your grip on the “right” choice, trust your impulses, and discover a more embodied path into character. Instructor Spotlight Cameron Britton received a Primetime Emmy® nomination for his breakout performance as Ed Kemper in Netflix’s Mindhunter. His credits also include Hazel in The Umbrella Academy, Richard Jewell in Manhunt: Deadly Games, A Man Called Otto, Mickey 17, Paradise, and Spider-Noir, with upcoming roles in Wild Things and Na Hong-jin’s Hope. Across drama, comedy, historical figures, and heightened worlds, Cameron has built a body of work defined by specificity, transformation, and an ability to make even the most unexpected characters feel fully human.
