Meisner Fundamentals
Presence, Listening, and Truthful Acting

Service Description
When actors rely on control instead of presence, scene work becomes manufactured, predictable, and self-conscious. Without the ability to actively listen, you fall into the trap of forcing a performance rather than reacting to what is happening in the moment. You miss the genuine, unscripted moments that make acting magnetic, leaving your performance feeling guarded, safe, and disconnected. This six-week class introduces the foundational principles of the Meisner Technique, designed to strip away self-awareness and force you out of your head. You’ll stop managing the outcome and learn to trust your raw instincts, placing your attention where it belongs: on your partner. Through repetition, independent activity, emotional preparation, and scene work, you’ll discover what you’ve been missing in your craft. You’ll learn to recognize when you are anticipating or self-censoring, giving you practical, repeatable tools to get back into the life of the scene and allow the moment to truly change you. In this class, you’ll: Use the repetition exercise to become present and connected with a scene partner. Develop greater spontaneity by listening and allowing yourself to be genuinely affected. Explore independent activity, concentration, stakes, and emotional preparation. Create authentic emotional life without forcing a feeling or straining for a result. Connect the work to character through relationship, point of view, wants, and needs. Bring truthful listening into text, objectives, actions, and imaginary circumstances. Integrate Meisner principles into grounded, emotionally available scene work. Receive individualized feedback, adjustments, and coaching each week. Whether you are new to Meisner or looking to break free from over-thought acting, this course offers a practical process for becoming remarkably present, responsive, and alive on stage and screen. Instructor Spotlight Lara is a Meisner-trained actor and director who first encountered the technique at The Neighborhood Playhouse, studying with Richard Pinter, a student of Sanford Meisner. She has developed and presented work across a range of stages. As a drama therapist, Lara brings a deep understanding of presence, connection, and creative expression to her work with actors.
